Colossians 1:9-13

Colossians 1:9-13, "For this cause we also, since the day we heard it, do not cease to pray for you, and to desire that you might be filled with the knowledge of his will in all wisdom and spiritual understanding. That you might walk worthy of the Lord unto all pleasing, being fruitful in every good work, and increasing in the knowledge of God; Strengthened with all might, according to his glorious power, unto all patience and longsuffering with joyfulness; Giving thanks unto the Father, which has made us meet to be partakers of the inheritance of the saints in light: Who has delivered us from the power of darkness, and has transferred us into the kingdom of his dear Son:"

Has Sin Reproduced Itself in your Life?

Sin has a way of reproducing itself as time progresses.  These are referred to as generational curses. Issues and problems that recur in the lives of children and their children’s children. Generational curses have existed since Adam and Eve. David and his family is a prime example of the effects that sin has on you and those you are connected to. 2 Samuel 11 tells the story of David and Bathsheba, David’s and most of our issues begin when we aren't acting according to God’s will. We venture off and begin to engage in an activity or be somewhere that we do not belong. We must be sure that we aren't being led by our own desires but by God’s. His desire brings Peace and Joy, but the desires of the flesh brings forth sin and death.

David belonged at war, because this was the time that Kings usually went to war. Acting out of character David remained in Jerusalem and wondered straight into temptation. On the roof of the palace he noticed Bathsheba bathing, and sought after her. Not refusing to act on the desires within him, but was led away by his lust. In the Lord’s Prayer we often recite the part that mentions “lead us not into temptation”, but we must remember to be where God has ordained us to be in order for us not to be led into temptation.

This is so true; many people you may know would be a live to day or lives would have turned out differently if they would have been where they were supposed to be instead of where their desires led them. David acting out of character allowed him to be tempted beyond his own ability to abstain from sinning. He later on committed adultery with Bathsheba, and had her husband killed. Not only did he commit adultery with this woman, but he had to sin again to cover up the sin that he had committed. Uriah who was Bathsheba’s husband appears to be a noble man according to the text in Samuel.

But he was caught in between the sin of two adulterers. I wonder did Uriah know that his wife bathed on the rooftop or was just this one occurrence? Could this have been prevented if Uriah had told his wife not to bathe on the rooftop?

David tried to manipulate Uriah, even going to the extent of getting him drunk in order for him to sleep with his wife Bathsheba. David tried multiple ways to get Uriah to sleep with Bathsheba in order to cover up his sinful act. I wonder what would have happened if David would have repented before the Lord at the moment, and didn’t try to solve his problem by himself? The effects of David’s sin didn’t stop there, the first son that Bathsheba bore died from an illness. David’s family was rebellious and lived in turmoil.

David’s son Amnon raped his half-sister Tamar, and that led to Absalom killing Amnon as an act of revenge. Later on Absalom rebelled against David and slept with ten of his father’s concubines. Abonijah tried to set himself up as king before David died when Solomon would be ordained King. Later during Solomon’s reign he had Adonijah executed.

David’s sinful acts really went on to affect his family, and many of the issues he faced, his sons faced especially Solomon. Solomon had an issue with woman that he couldn’t stop, and it led to his fall. The sins we allow to overpower us and control us will be passed on to our children. But Jesus Christ himself came to break those curses, and allows us to overcome sin in our lives, Isaiah 53, Gal 3:13, John 8:36.
